The 5 Most Effective Strategies
Reduce credit utilization
Utilization accounts for 30% of your FICO score. If you have a $1,000 limit card with an $800 balance, your utilization is 80% — that destroys your score. Paying that balance down to $100 can add 50–100 points in the next reporting cycle.
Goal: keep every card below 10% of its limit.
Dispute errors on your report
The FTC found that 34% of credit reports contain errors. Accounts that are not yours, incorrect balances, wrong dates — each error you remove can significantly boost your score. Bureaus have 30 days to investigate under the FCRA.
Dispute with the bureau AND the original creditor simultaneously.
Become an authorized user
If a family member or friend with good credit adds you as an authorized user on their card, their positive history appears on your report. You do not need to use the card — just being added can add years of positive history instantly.
Look for accounts with 2+ years of history and low utilization.
Negotiate collections with pay-for-delete
If you have collection accounts, you can negotiate to pay them in exchange for deletion from your report. Many agencies accept 25–50 cents on the dollar. Always get the agreement in writing before paying.
Never pay without a signed deletion agreement first.
Set up autopay and never miss a payment
Payment history is 35% of your score — the single most important factor. One late payment can cost you 50–100 points. Set up autopay for at least the minimum on every active account today.
Set payment alerts 5 days before the due date as a backup.
